M119 Misfire Procedures

Misfire Terms

  1. Checkfire. A command given by anyone observing an unsafe act or condition.
  2. Misfire. A failure of a round to fire after initiating action is taken. This may be due to the failure in functioning of the primer, igniter, propelling charge, or firing mechanism. Misfires must be treated as delayed firings until determined otherwise.
  3. Hangfire. A delay in the functioning of the primer, igniter, or propelling charge. The delay, although unpredictable, ranges from a fraction of a second to several minutes.
  4. Sticker. A projectile that has lodged in the tube after being fired. If a sticker round is encountered, follow the procedures for unloading a Sticker Round in this work package.
  5. Cookoff. The premature functioning of the propelling charge or projectile when it is initiated by the heat of the cannon assembly.
  6. Cold Tube. A tube that has not exceeded the rates of fire and does not cause water from a wet swab to boil, fry, or steam off, when placed just forward of the gas check seat.
  7. Hot Tube. A tube that has exceeded the rates of fire and causes water from a wet swab to boil, fry, or steam off, when placed just forward of the gas check seat.
  8. Hot Weapon. A tube and breech that have been brought to a sufficiently high temperature by previous firings, capable of transmitting heat to the round to activate its explosive components.
  9. Hot Weather. Any weather in which the outside temperature exceeds +100°F (+38°C) during the day.
  10. Attempt to Fire. Any action to fire the M777A2 using approved procedures in accordance with WP 0023, Figure 20 or WP 0043, Figure 1.
